At the signing of an MoU with the New Era Foundation and flag-off of the Spelling Bee Competition, Mrs. Amosun pledged support for projects that motivate students.
Mrs. Olufunso Amosun expressed her desire to support projects that motivate students to pay better attention to their studies, as part of the administration's mission to rebuild education standards in Ogun State.
She spoke at the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the state government and the New Era Foundation, and the flag-off of the maiden Spelling Bee Competition for secondary school students. The competition was designed to improve English language learning, especially spelling, and to raise academic standards in public schools.
She noted that spelling skills had suffered in an era of computers and mobile phones that complete words as we type, and of SMS short forms that reinvent words.
The competition, open to secondary school students across all 20 local government areas, was organised in partnership with the New Era Foundation and the Ogun State Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, with the aim of making it an annual event.
“Research has shown that there is direct correlation between spelling ability and reading ability; as such, spelling accuracy impacts positively on reading accuracy, which goes hand in hand with writing skills and by extension will improve the academic performance of our students.”
